How did you get into/ what drew you to this field/ role?

My grandfather was a surgeon, so I got to see first hand just how impactful he was with his patients. I also saw how intellectually and emotionally challenging that work was, and I was drawn to that.

What excites you about your work?

First and foremost I am a clinician, so being able to work with creative individuals to invent solutions to medicine’s pressing problems is incredibly exciting and animating for me.

What advice would you give to those who are considering getting involved in translational research/ product development?

Often times the actual reluctance is related to the effort required to throw your hat into the ring, grant application preparation being a prime example. Anytime I’m reluctant to pursue a goal, I try to tease out how I will feel after that grant is submitted, or after that manuscript is submitted. If the answer is, I will be glad I tried, then I go for it.

If you weren’t in your current career, what other profession would you like to try?

If I wasn’t working to innovate in healthcare then I’d want to work closely with those who did, helping them to achieve their goals and to create the positive change they aspire to.
