DESCRIPTION:Dental & Craniofacial TWIGs Webinar \n\n\n“Insights on Dental Pulp Inflammation & Regeneration” \nJoin us on August 24th at 2:00 PM Eastern Time U.S. for the next webinar being organized by \nthe Dental & Craniofacial TWIG. \nThe webinars are free for all TERMIS members to attend. \nPlease register by Monday\, August 23rd at 8:00 PM Eastern Time U.S. \nOur two speakers are: \nSamer Zaky\, DMD\, PhD \nSamer Zaky (DMD\, PhD) is a research assistant professor at the Center for Craniofacial Regeneration (CCR) and the Department of Restorative Dentistry – School of Dental Medicine – University of Pittsburgh-USA. In 2000\, Samer received his original Bachelor degree in Dental Medicine and Surgery from the University of Alexandria -Egypt where he was first introduced to Tissue Engineering research. Awarded a Marie Curie Fellowship (FP6)\, he earned his PhD in Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine in 2009 from the University of Genoa- Italy. In 2015\, he received his DMD degree from the University of Pittsburgh to couple clinical work to his research. Samer’s research broadly tackles the characterization of multipotent cells and conductive biomaterials for mineralized tissue regeneration\, namely bones and teeth while re-establishing the stem cell niche. His current research interest focusses on dental pulp regeneration. As a dentist\, Samer is a general practitioner who strongly advocates for disease prevention and patient education. \nArwa Khayat \nArwa Khayat is a Saudi female dentist\, earned her bachelor’s Degree of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Riyadh Colleges of Dentistry and Pharmacy and continued her postgraduate studies in the United States. ISSRDC 2021\, which will take place virtually August 3-5\, is hosted by the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)\, manager of the International Space Station (ISS) U.S. National Laboratory; NASA; and the American Astronautical Society. \nThe event is free to attend; however\, registration is required. \nThe theme for this year’s conference is “Challenge. Partnership. Transformation.” This past year was filled with challenges that required us to come together and transform how we think and work. Through partnership\, we can achieve the transformation needed to address the many challenges we face today—here on Earth\, in driving a robust economy in low Earth orbit\, and as we advance our exploration goals to the Moon and beyond. \nThis year’s conference sessions will explore a wide variety of topics\, including: \n\nSpace policy\nRegenerative medicine\nIn-space production applications\nAdvanced materials\nInvestment in the evolving low Earth orbit economy\nInspiring the next generation through space-based research and programs\n\nResource Center\, PI\, Dr. William Wagner will be a panelist at the 2021 International Space Station Research and Development Conference (ISSRDC)\, which will feature a fireside chat on biomanufacturing in space. Gary Rodrigue\, director of programs and partnerships at the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS)\, will moderate a discussion with Dr. William Wagner\, director of the University of Pittsburgh’s McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. SUMMARY:Society for Biomaterials-TERMIS Panel - "Picture a Scientist"
DESCRIPTION:The Society for Biomaterials (SFB) is partnering with the Tissuse Engineering and Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS) to host a discussion on the issues presented in the recent documentary “Picture a Scientist” on Thursday\, July 29\, 2021 at 12 noon Eastern. \nSNOPSIS: “Picture a Scientist” chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists.  Biologist Nancy Hopkins\, chemist Raychelle Burks\, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences\, ranging from brutal harrassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way\, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations\, we encounter scientific luminaries- including social scientists\, neuroscientists\, and psychologists-who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse\, equitable\, and open to all. \nWe will send out the screening link for the movie to registered attendees and it is also available on Netflix\, PBS and other platforms.  Our discussion will focus on some of the specific issues raised in the film with clips replayed during the joint webinar\, but we encourage you to watch the film in its entirety before the discussion.  The panel discussion is schedule for two hours.
